New benefits, a new look — and a higher cost — are coming to the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Credit Card from American Express.
The companies said that effective August 11, existing card benefits will be supplemented with new ones, including the elimination of foreign transaction fees; free Wi-Fi from the worldwide Boingo network; and free premium in-room Internet access at participating SPG hotels.
AmEx and Starwood said persons with an SPG American Express OPEN Business Credit Card (marketed to small businesses) will also get access to Sheraton Club Lounges at Sheraton hotels, with all the perks they provide, including free daily breakfast and evening drinks and snacks.
For new members, the first year of membership is free, but effective August 11 the annual fee for the SPG Card from American Express card goes up from the current $65 to $95.
The new benefits have a number of clarifications, restrictions and limitations attached to them (especially the Boingo perk). To read all the fine print, go to this announcement of the news and scroll down to the footnotes.
The card has also been redesigned with a new purple color.
It will continue to provide the benefits previously offered, including SPG program earnings of one to five Starpoints per dollar spent on the card; credit for five nights and two stays toward SPG elite status each year; and an upgrade to SPG Gold after spending $30,000 on the card in a calendar year.
