Worried about missing your favorite baseball team’s big game because you have a flight scheduled at the same time? JetBlue is solving that problem for passengers by bringing live, real-time broadcasts of major league games to its in-flight entertainment options on Fly-Fi-equipped aircraft.
The airline said it has entered into a deal with Major League Baseball’s media arm that will give passengers in-flight access to free Internet streaming of live baseball, as well as archived games available on demand. Passengers have to download the MLB.com At Bat mobile app, and then they can use JetBlue Fly-Fi Hub to get free access to regular season games of all 30 MLB teams.
“With speeds up to 20 mbps per device, Fly-Fi offers a true Internet streaming experience that no other U.S. carrier is capable of providing, ” JetBlue said. “MLB.TV becomes the first live sports property to join JetBlue’s robust list of leading brands offering content on JetBlue flights including Amazon Prime streaming entertainment (coming soon), The Wall Street Journal, PBS, NatGeo, Vice, Harper Collins and Time, Inc. among others.”
The addition of Major League Baseball is big plum for JetBlue, which already offers lots of in-flight sports programming through its free seatback DIRECTV system, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNJ, NBC Sports, Fox Sports 1 and NFL Network.
The airline is currently deploying high-speed Fly-Fi streaming service across its fleet, a job that should be finished for all its A320s and A321s this year. It recently announced a Fly-Fi partnership with Amazon to stream the latter’s entertainment offerings to passengers’ mobile devices.
