Take your sunglasses off in Canada! (Photo of Vancouver: Chris McGinnis)
Nobody likes to look like a dork, especially if a multi-million-dollar business deal is on the line. Or if you are just trying to make a good impression that one day may lead to a million-dollar deal.
To me one of the most fascinating, rewarding (and perplexing!) parts of an international business trip is adapting to another culture when it comes to meeting, greeting and just getting along in a foreign business environment. I actually went to school to learn how to master much of this this at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix. But I still find it interesting and am constantly picking up on nuances I never knew before.
Such was the case when a company GetVoIP send over the infographic below with tips on business etiquette in 18 countries around the world. Some of this was old hat to me…. but much of it was brand new, for example, I learned:
>It’s best to refrain from using a knife in Austria
>Don’t ask a Belgian to dinner
>Take your sunglasses off in Canada
>Keep your hands out of your pockets in Germany
>Handshakes in Singapore can be weak and awkwardly long
>Brits don’t want to know about your personal life
>Americans are known for being willing to meet over breakfast, lunch or dinner
